Tristitia

Crucidiction

Holy Records

Review by Neil St.Laurent

"Pray to your mighty god, and I will pray to mine" With that Galvez begins your journey into a dark underworld of musical expression.

Tristitia is a very deep and generally slow doom style band. The theme presented in "Crucidiction" is bleak and almost disturbing at times. Ranging from words against the saviour to a depressing view of mankind's future the message given within is appropriately delivered with a slow brooding musical quality. While there are slightly speedier guitar segments, they generally keep to a fairly slow speed and tend to offer nothing too complex. Simple melodies and a backing bass give a very dreery atmosphere to the music. Although the riffs are well varied and quite distinct, unless you really enjoy this type of music you'll likely end up becoming quite bored with it -- there aren't very many layers to the music, leaving it quite shallow. Yet strangley this simplicity manages to provide a great deal of emotion.

On top of the slow moving procession comes the deep chant like vocals that give the music that extra step into the darkness. Also making their presence are low black metal style vocals. The application of both the styles to the music seems to be quite arbitrary and used mainly to provide some variety to the music.

Tristitia doesn't have much to offer for technical merits. The achieved goal of this music is entirely emotional, something they did a very good job at. So if you do enjoy the ultra slow and dark musical genres, and want some sullen music to feed your melancholy then "Crucidiction" is the what you are looking for.
