Sickness

Ornaments of Mutilation MCD

Review by Miika Kuusinen

And Another Florida-based brutal death metal act, Sickness, is ushered into the world. In ”Ornaments of Mutilation,” the band bashes out 8 songs in less than 19 minutes so do not expect progressive stuff here. In fact you can’t get simpler than this. The songs are very short as you might expect but also extremely simple with no more than a few riffs in each song. If the songs were even a minute longer, they would end up being quite boring but here they are almost over before you even realize it.

The whole 18+ minutes do blend together into a single sound though, thus lowering your concentration towards the end drastically. Unfortunately the production is rather thin and powerless and lots of aggression and heaviness is lost. Vocals are your standard death growls and thus fitting but I would really like to hear a bit more complex and brutal riffing and maybe twin guitars. Ever popular insanity/serial killer/gore lyrics can be read/heard and what else you would really expect from a band whose artwork consists of a naked female body with its intestines ripped out? A Few nice samples from TV news/movies do add some needed spooky atmosphere but do not much affect the final result.

Not exactly any faults here, but you can’t get much average than this in brutal death metal. All the elements Sickness has could well be from the handbook of how to be next Cannibal Corpse.
