Aurora
Eos
(c)(p)1997 Voices Of Wonder / Serious Entertainment
Review by Richard Stuart
Too many new bands these days seem to be content with just blatantly copying
the more well known bands such as Bathory, At The Gates, etc., so Aurora
is a treat -- a band who have found their own style, and it's only
their first album! Aurora are from Denmark, and "Eos" lasts for over 55
minutes.
The music is probably best described as progressive, melodic death metal
(although the band prefer to call it 'Transcendal Metal'). Mostly, the
vocals are harsh screams, but there's also some clean singing -- both
male and female -- and this really adds another dimension to the songs,
offering some very memorable vocal melodies. The band seems to use
effects pedals at times, on both the guitars and the clean vocals (which
makes them sound a bit weird on the first listen). And despite moments
like the spacey sound in "Psychedelic", the band doesn't actually use any
keyboards.
Despite the experimental touch, Aurora do write actual "songs",
sometimes with choruses and such -- so they don't fall into the trap
of trying to be so off-the-wall that they fall on their arses. Tracks 1,
2, 4, 6, 7 and 9 are probably my favourites, but the album is
consistently good throughout, with no bad tracks or fillers. I should
imagine most people into melodic extreme Metal will enjoy this album,
but I especially recommend it to fans of bands like Opeth or Solefald.
