Nasum

inhale / exhale

(c)(p)1998 Relapse Records

Review by Neil St.Laurent

Thanks to Relapse for the CD

Formed back in 1992 this pair of Swedes have, with a series of shared compilations and 7" releases, been existing in the shadows for several years now. Hoping to capture the essence that Napalm Death once had, these two grindcore "visionaries" have finally been given the opportunity to release this full length, 38 song album, on Relapse Records.

Nasum sets out to produce uncompromised grindcore, a task that many take upon themselves, but few actually succeed (even the forefathers, Napalm Death, couldn't succeed in later releases). "inhale / exhale" is a collection of fast, aggressive, guitar riffs delivered in short, powerful doses. As expected, most of the music is quite mindless and serves only to introduce a little bit of adrenaline flow into your system. All the unrelenting riffs and beats, combined with deeper and higher pitch growling, makes for a very pleasant disruption. There really isn't that much more to say about the music, solid grindcore action.

Nasum's "inhale / exhale" from start to finish will be sure to bother and upset most music listeners out there, fortunately for those of you that like grindcore you'll be quite happy with this release -- unrelenting and brutal, just the way it should be. With any luck a band like Nasum should be able to replace Napalm Death as masters of the genre.
