Rotting Christ

Triarchy Of The Lost Lovers

(c)(p)1996

Review by Kevin Trout

Rotting Christ could be described as a death metal band, but also contains some black metal elements as well as a certain gothic quality. The three band members go by rather interesting names, with Necromayhem on guitar and performing vocals, Mutilator on bass and Necrosavron playing the drums. By calling Rotting Christ a death metal band, I'm not implying a typical death metal band, as the guitars aren't tuned low enough that your dog can't hear them, no blast beat drumming is present, etc... What is present is a lot of riffage, a medium range growl/shriek, and a small amount of synth. The lyrics are presented in free verse poetry and provide tales of death and destruction. The synth presence contributes quite nicely to the lighter guitar melodies which are played when the band is not churning out riffs. "Triarchy Of The Lost Lovers" is an album which contains a good amount of variety within. Scattered throughout are faster paced songs to ensure that the album doesn't contain any lulls or concentrate too heavily on one style of song. What stands out most to me with Rotting Christ is the quality of the guitar work. The riffs are highly appealing and draw you into listening to the disc many times. When working I found it easy to let this CD repeat many times. Rotting Christ are a fine band who manage to take the death metal genre and expand on it to where they believe it should be. This is a disc that definitely warrants some attention.

Editors Note: Please send mail telling Trout to give the CD back to me now, he doesn't want to return it, ever!
