Thy Serpent

Forests Of Witchery

(c)(p)1996 Spinefarm Records

Review by Mark Rafferty

From Finland is this (once one man project-now four piece) band called Thy Serpent. I felt like saying that they were a black metal band that play melodic atmospheric kind of music but that doesn't seem right, the vocals, keyboards, and appearance of the dude pictured on the back of the CD case makes one think maybe black metal, but no (his face paint shows that there is a fine line between looking like an evil black metaller and looking like... well... a clown). Now before I get to explaining why I don't like this album, I should say that it may not be all that bad. On some sort of technical level the music of Thy Serpent is decent(?) in that its well played and the musicianship seems to be up to par. Another good thing is the production of Forests of Witchery, very clear and the drums have a sharp sound. My problem with Forests of Witchery is it's so plain, each boring rhythm is played the same over extended length of time before moving on, throughout the whole disc. The music has a way of flowing so well that each track passes by without notice, too nice and pretty sounding, even the gargly vocals have a friendliness about them. Music that is this laid back should at least gain some appeal by being dark or even depressing, this stuff is just 'there', void of emotion. I think some people may go for Thy Serpent, but just not enough kick or 'feel' for myself. This may eventually grow on me, but will it get the chance to?
