Cold Hard Slumber

Ed Stal

And the bodies lie down,
Beside me in front and far back,
They sleep silently now,
Away from the noise,
Free from the anguish,
A stubborn slumber of sorts.

And I still run forward,
Through the lead skies,
Shouting and returning anger,
Putting to sleep others,
They are the sandmen,
The ground is my bed.

And the fruits flare,
Amber lights and dizzy haze,
Breathe with a sigh,
Through a warm fuzzy mask,
Continuing forward,
The game must go on.

And I see the children,
Up to one I go and greet,
His eyes stare blankly,
Glisten and ask me gently,
If a god will save his soul,
Have I come to help him?

And a warmth grows inside me,
A temptation to retreat,
But as I look at the sleeping,
Stare down the sights,
He is my enemy,
Yet I still shed a tear.

And between his eyes I put a bullet.
